"You are leading us to extinction", hundreds of thousands of doctors

Madrid's government has been the target of criticism in recent years, especially since the start of the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic, for understaffing hospitals and primary health care centers. Protesters say they are dismantling public health services and favoring private health providers.

"They have cut our salaries instead of increasing them. We are overwhelmed with work and have no support. We are in danger of extinction,” Lilian Ramis, 61, a doctor at the El Molar health center in Madrid, told Reuters.

Demonstrators filled the Plaza Cibeles area in the center of the city, chanting and waving flags.

One demonstrator wore a large model of Isabel Diaz Ayuso, the right-wing leader of Madrid's regional government, with a Pinocchio-like nose.

Regional governments in Spain are responsible for a large part of the health budget as part of the country's devolved political system.

A regional government spokesman said the number of people who marched through the streets of central Madrid was 250,000, while organizers said it was closer to 1 million.
