Turkish magazine publishes cartoon of Prophet Muhammad, Istanbul on fire

Clashes erupted in Istanbul on Monday, June 30, as police used rubber bullets and tear gas to disperse an angry crowd, following allegations that a satirical magazine had published a caricature of the Prophet Muhammad.

The clashes occurred after the Istanbul prosecutor ordered the arrest of the editors of LeMan magazine, on the grounds that they had published a cartoon that "insulted religious values in public."

LeMan's editor-in-chief, Tuncay Akgun, said the image had been misinterpreted.

"This cartoon is in no way a depiction of the Prophet Muhammad. The cartoon has nothing to do with the Prophet Muhammad. We would never take such a risk," he told AFP.

After the news spread, several dozen angry protesters attacked a bar frequented by LeMan employees in central Istanbul, provoking clashes with police, an AFP correspondent reported.

The clashes quickly escalated into clashes involving about 250 to 300 people, according to the correspondent.

Founded in 1991, LeMan is known for political satire and has often been targeted by conservatives, particularly after its support for the French magazine Charlie Hebdo following the 2015 terrorist attack in Paris, where 12 people were killed by Islamist gunmen for publishing cartoons of the prophet.

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya told the X network that police had arrested the cartoonist responsible for the image, as well as LeMan's graphic designer.

Justice Minister Yilmaz Tunc said an investigation had been opened for "public insult to religious values".

"Disregard for our beliefs is never acceptable, " he wrote in X.

Istanbul Governor Davut Gul also condemned "this mentality that tries to provoke society by attacking our sacred values."

"We will not stand silent in the face of any base act that targets the trust of our nation, " he declared.
