Thousands of students and citizens gathered on Friday evening in "Syntagma" Square in Athens to protest against the government, which they say is responsible for the railway tragedy two years ago in Tempe, where 57 people, mostly students, lost their lives.

This protest is taking place at a time when a debate is taking place in parliament on a motion of no confidence in the Mitsotakis government.

Due to the protest in central Athens, the "Syntagma" and "Panepistimio" metro stations have been closed by order of the police, with trains passing through without stopping.

Earlier, police announced the arrest of 13 people in connection with the protest.

Meanwhile, a large crowd has also gathered in Thessaloniki's Aristotelous Square and protests are currently taking place in several other major cities across the country.

This marks the second wave of rallies this Friday, following previous student-led demonstrations demanding justice for the victims of the 2023 Tempe rail disaster in Athens and other cities.

Lawmakers from the opposition, the center-left PASOK party, and left-wing parties submitted a no-confidence motion against the government during a parliamentary debate on the tragedy.

With 156 seats in the 300-seat Parliament, the Greek Prime Minister's government is expected to survive the no-confidence motion.
