New footage has been released showing the dramatic moments after a firefighting helicopter crashed into the artificial lake of Aoos in Metsovo, Greece, during a firefighting operation in the Grevena area.
The video shows one of the pilots in the water, next to the body of the sunken helicopter, which is clearly visible below the surface of the lake. After a few seconds, he surfaces and stands chest-deep in water, observing the submerged Bell aircraft.
The footage comes after another video that has previously circulated online, showing the moment a helicopter lost control while taking water from a lake for firefighting operations. As the vehicle attempted to gain altitude, its tail touched the surface of the water, causing it to lose stability and crash into the lake. The footage then shows the helicopter engulfed in flames and sinking.
The two pilots managed to get out of the vehicle and swim to the shore of the lake, where they were helped by a boat and then transported by ambulance to the Ioannina hospital for medical checkups.
An eyewitness who filmed the incident described the first moments of the event, saying the helicopter appeared to be having difficulty taking off while taking on water. According to him, the craft was “not able to gain altitude” before hitting the water’s surface.
"Something is wrong, it can't gain altitude," the witness said, also describing the moment when the helicopter lost control and capsized in the water.
He added that after the collapse, residents and witnesses tried to help and immediately notified the authorities, who arrived at the scene within minutes along with firefighters and police.
Greek authorities are continuing investigations to determine the exact causes of the accident, while the incident has brought back into focus the dangers of aerial operations while extinguishing fires in difficult areas.
