French naval special forces have seized another oil tanker linked to Russia's so-called "ghost fleet" in the Mediterranean, off the coast of Sicily.
The news was announced by French President Emmanuel Macron, describing the operation as part of European efforts to prevent Moscow from circumventing international sanctions, Ynet reports.
According to Macron, the ship Deliver, which was sailing under the Cameroonian flag and had departed from the Russian port of Primorsk, was detained on Tuesday for allegedly violating maritime law.
This is the fifth case of the seizure of such a tanker by France since the launch of the operation against the "ghost fleet" in September last year.
The French president also released footage from the operation, showing French commandos descending from a helicopter and boarding the ship.
"This action against the ghost fleet, taken just days after a similar British operation, shows the determination of the Europeans. We will not allow this fleet to circumvent sanctions and finance Russia's war," Macron declared.
The “ghost fleet” consists of hundreds of tankers, often old, that use foreign flags and unclear ownership structures to export Russian oil despite sanctions imposed after the invasion of Ukraine. According to Western estimates, this fleet includes over 700 ships and transports about 75% of Russian oil exports.
Moscow has consistently described such operations as "piracy".
Meanwhile, France and Britain estimate that sanctions and increased controls have significantly reduced Russia's revenues from oil and gas exports, which fell by 24% during 2025.
At the same time, Ukraine announced that it had struck an oil facility in the Russian Krasnodar region and two refineries in Ufa, about 1,500 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.
President Volodymyr Zelensky described these attacks as part of a long-term strategy to hit the Russian energy industry and increase pressure on the Kremlin to engage in negotiations to end the war.
On the other hand, the Kremlin denied reports that it is pressuring Belarus to expand its military involvement in the war in Ukraine, calling these claims untrue.
