The Japanese organization 'Nihon Hidankyo' wins the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize

The Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo has won the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize "for its efforts to achieve a world without nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons must never be used again."

The grassroots movement of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki is also known as Hibakusha. The award was announced at the Norwegian Nobel Institute in Oslo.

Narges Mohammadi, an imprisoned Iranian women's rights lawyer, won the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize for her courageous fight against the oppression of women in Iran and relentless struggle for social reform.

The peace prize is the only Nobel awarded in the Norwegian capital – the others are announced in Stockholm.

In total, 286 candidates – 197 individuals and 89 organizations – are known to have been nominated this year. The Norwegian Nobel Committee keeps the names of the candidates secret for 50 years, but those who have the right to nominate can reveal who they have nominated.

The prize carries a cash prize of 11 million Swedish kroner ($1.1 million) from a legacy left by the prize's creator, Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel. In addition to the cash prize, winners will be presented with a medal on December 10.
