Obama: Israel to respect international law

Former US President Barack Obama called on Israel on October 23 to exercise restraint in military operations in the Gaza Strip, following the October 7 attacks by the militant group Hamas on southern Israeli cities.

"In particular, it is important - as President Biden has repeatedly emphasized - that the Israeli Army abide by international law, including laws that require the avoidance of civilian deaths and suffering," Obama wrote on the online platform, Medium.

Thousands of Palestinians have already died as a result of the bombing in Gaza, most of them children, the former US president said, adding that hundreds of thousands of people in the country have been displaced.

Obama emphasized that after the "indescribable brutality" by Hamas, Israel has the right to protect its citizens from such violence, but "the world is watching".

Israel has been relentlessly bombing the Gaza Strip since Hamas carried out rampages on October 7 in southern Israeli cities, killing more than 1,400 people. As a result of Israeli airstrikes, more than 5,000 Palestinians have been killed, according to officials in Gaza.

"The decision by the Government of Israel to cut off the supply of food, water and electricity to a besieged civilian population threatens not only to worsen the growing humanitarian crisis, but could also harden the Palestinian position for generations to come, destroy global support for Israel, prioritize Israel's enemies, and undermine long-term efforts to achieve peace and stability in the region," Obama added.

He fully supported US President Joe Biden, who pledged to support Israel in "fighting Hamas, disarming it, and brokering the safe return of hundreds of hostages to their families."

Obama stressed that it is understandable that many Israelis have demanded that their Government do whatever is necessary to destroy Hamas and ensure that attacks by Hamas never happen again.
