VIDEO: 158 cars collide due to dense fog, 7 victims and 25 injured in the USA

At least seven people have died and 25 others have been injured after 158 cars crashed Monday morning in Louisiana, USA, due to poor visibility caused by fog. The death toll could rise as rescue teams are still removing vehicles from the scene.

Meteorologists said dense fog had reduced visibility to less than 10 metres. Smoke from wildfires in the area combined with dense fog that developed in the area early Monday morning, resulting in extremely low visibility. In some places visibility was close to zero.

Some of the vehicles caught fire after the initial crash, authorities said. One of the vehicles involved was a tanker truck carrying a "dangerous liquid", police said without providing details on the substance. Videos published on social networks show destroyed cars and piled on top of each other.

One of the drivers told local media that: "I had already pressed the brakes to slow down when another vehicle hit me," said 41-year-old Christopher Kohl. "All I could hear for 30 minutes was cars crashing," said another driver.
