The death toll from Storm Babet has reached 7. The Met Office issued a red flood alert for the east Midlands, including Nottinghamshire, Sheffield, Leeds and York and Humberside.

The Environment Agency has also warned of flooding in the north of England. Minister Humza Yousaf visited Brechin, in Angus, where dozens of homes were flooded when the South Esk River burst its banks. He described the flood as "unprecedented" while promising government support in the coming days to protect and shelter residents.

Local authorities have announced that the floods have already made homes uninhabitable and some residents may never return.

Flooding has also wreaked havoc on rail networks in northern Britain as travel warnings remain in place as the weather continues to worsen.
