US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump visited flood-ravaged areas in central Texas, where 120 people died last weekend, while 161 others are still missing.

Trump expressed deep shock at what he had seen.

"This is one of the worst. We did a site visit and it's hard to believe this destruction. I've never seen anything like it," he said.

He described the Guadalupe River as a "narrow stream that turned into a monster."

The President stressed that many people are still missing, including dozens of children.

Trump said he had spent time with the victims' families, describing it as the most difficult part of the visit.

"We gave them our warmest condolences, but how can you give condolences to someone who has lost a young child full of life?" Trump said.

First Lady Melania Trump also offered her emotional support to the affected families.

"My deepest condolences to all the parents who lost beautiful young souls. We mourn with you, the nation mourns with you," she said.

She said she had hugged and prayed with the families of the victims, and revealed that one of the relatives had given her a bracelet from Camp Mystic.

"I promised I would come back," she concluded.

Last weekend, deadly storms slammed central Texas, dumping months' worth of rain in a matter of hours. River levels rose sharply, flooding homes, roads and vehicles.
