More than 1,300 employees of the US State Department are being laid off as part of a broad reorganization plan initiated by the administration of President Donald Trump , a move that has been described as dangerous by critics, who warn of major consequences for the global role of the US and its ability to confront international threats.

According to a senior State Department official, who spoke anonymously to The Associated Press, 1,107 civilian employees and 246 diplomatic service officials currently serving within the US have been notified of their dismissal.

Diplomatic officials affected by this decision will initially be placed on 120-day administrative leave, after which they will be permanently dismissed from their positions.

“As part of the Department’s internal reorganization, steps are being taken to reduce internal functions in order to focus on diplomatic priorities,” an official document states. According to the same source, the cuts are planned to primarily affect non-critical functions, repetitive tasks, or offices where savings can be achieved through functional mergers.

While President Trump, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Republican allies hailed the move as a necessary and long-overdue step to make the institution more efficient, many current and former diplomats have expressed serious concern.

According to them, the cuts will significantly harm the US's global influence and weaken its capacity to face growing challenges and threats in the international arena.
