The United States is not seeking "war" with China, US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said in Panama. At the same time, the Pentagon chief warned that Washington must "demonstrate resolve" in the face of Beijing's "threats."

"We do not seek war with China. And war with China is certainly not inevitable. We do not seek it in any form. But together we must prevent war by demonstrating resolve and strength in the face of China's threats in this hemisphere," said the US Secretary of Defense, speaking at a regional security summit in Panama.

"We must recognize the threat that China poses to our countries, our peoples, and peace in this region," he added, assessing that Chinese companies "are expropriating land, critical infrastructure in areas of strategic importance, such as energy and telecommunications."

Hegseth also believes that "the Chinese military has an overwhelming presence in the Western Hemisphere," "exploits military facilities" as well as "natural resources and territory to fuel its global military ambitions."

He also referred to China's "fishing fleet" that "steals the food of our nations and peoples" and called on countries to "have no doubt" that Beijing is operating in the region to gain "unfair military advantages and economic benefits."

Hegseth reiterated that Donald Trump's administration will not allow China to gain influence over the Panama Canal, which the Republican president recently threatened to "take back."
