"We will not attack Europe", Putin: F-16 planes will also attack NATO

Russia has no intention of going to war against any NATO country, but if the West provides Ukraine with F-16 fighter jets, they will shoot them down, even at member states' airports.

This was the warning of President Vladimir Putin, during a meeting with pilots of the Russian Air Force. He said the US-led military alliance had expanded eastward since the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, but, he said, Moscow had no aggressive intentions toward Poland, the Baltic states or the Czech Republic. He called the assertions that Russia intends to attack Europe after Ukraine absurd: "We have no aggressive intentions towards these countries. The idea that we are going to attack any other country, like Poland, the Baltic states and the Czech Republic is totally absurd. It's just a way to trick people into spending more on defense and leave the burden on them."

And yet, Putin was careful to make clear to the West the consequences of sending F-16s to Ukraine, as several countries have promised to do. According to him, these planes would not change the situation on the ground: "If they provide Kiev with F-16 planes and also train the pilots, this would not change the situation on the battlefield. And we will destroy the planes as we are doing today with tanks and rocket launchers. And of course, if the planes are used on the runways of third countries, they will become legitimate targets for us, wherever they are."

Putin's warning follows comments by Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba that the planes should arrive in Ukraine in the coming months. Kiev has been asking for the F-16s for months, and Belgium, Denmark, Norway and the Netherlands are among the countries that have pledged to provide them. A coalition of countries has promised to train Ukrainian pilots in their use.
