The Spanish government blocks the initiative for the independence of Catalonia

The Spanish government announced that it will challenge the Catalan law proposing a unilateral declaration of independence before the Constitutional Court.

Earlier this year, Catalan politicians gave the green light to move forward with a popular initiative suggesting the region declare independence from Spain.

Spanish ministers have agreed to challenge the bill in court, effectively paralyzing it.

Justice Minister Felix Bolanos emphasized that "we (the government and the Socialist Party) do not under any circumstances support the independence and isolation of Catalonia compared to Spain and the rest of Europe".

His comments come days after Marta Rovira, secretary general of the main separatist ERC party, told Spanish newspaper La Vanguardia that her party was in talks on an independence referendum with Spain's ruling Socialist Party.

Socialist politicians firmly denied her claim.

Bolanos said explicitly that Rovira was not telling the truth because of the upcoming elections and scolded his party for returning to "old formulas of conflict and collective failure".

Catalan voters will go to the polls on May 12 in early elections.

The Spanish government has been heavily criticized for passing the amnesty law, which eliminates non-violent criminal charges for those involved in the Catalan independence drive.

Bolanos emphasized that challenging the proposed law for the independence of Catalonia is "in line" with the government's approach which focuses on "dialogue, living in harmony and the protection of Catalan institutions".

However, Patricia Plaja, spokeswoman for the Catalan government, criticized the government's decision to link the legislation to the courts.
