New York is known as the "city that never sleeps", and with the latest initiative, this may be even truer.
After a lobbying battle launched by the tourism builders association, the Democratic city hall of the iconic American metropolis has bowed to continued pressure by announcing that it will grant at least one building permit for the casino.
The news is sensational because it could be the start of a revolution that could transform the city of almost 9 million people, almost 20 million if the suburbs are included, into a Las Vegas or its sister Atlantic City.
It is this last city, which is no more than 2 hours away by car from New York and which until now has also attracted the clientele of that metropolis, generates about 5 billion dollars every year, but it is imagined that the profits in the "Big Apple" will to be many times higher.
At the moment there are three permits, where two of these are thought to be built outside the center, or rather outside the historic neighborhoods such as Manhattan, Bronx, Quins and Brooklyn, where there is no lack of a hybrid enterprise called "Racino", usually a structure where there is a horse track and the characteristic casino machines, but no tables for poker and other gambling games.
But at least one permit will be developed on actual city land, and the proposals are different. From the Brooklyn amusement park, to Coney Island, the area of the city with a pronounced dominance of the population of Slavic origin, to the iconic Times Square, where it would probably hide in that jungle of lights and theaters, in a 54-story building.
Another proposal talks about the luxury area of Hudson Yards, in the Vessel building. Meanwhile, there is also the possibility of the top floor of the Saks shopping center, on Fifth Street, in front of Central Park, which is like an intermediate solution, although very expensive, about 25 billion dollars of investment.
