War/ Israel airstrikes against Hezbollah in Lebanon, 492 killed, among them 31

Intense Israeli attacks against Hezbollah killed 492 people yesterday in Lebanon, including 35 children, according to the country's authorities.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was deeply concerned by the number of civilian casualties in southern and eastern Lebanon bombed by the Israeli army, his spokesman said, at a time when the international community fears that this escalation between Israel and the movement Hezbollah, backed by Iran, could drag the region into an uncontrollable spiral.

World powers have urged restraint as both sides appear to be edging closer to an all-out war.

EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell said the "escalation is extremely dangerous and worrying" ahead of a meeting of world leaders at the UN in New York, adding that "we are almost at full-scale war".

From New York, where the United Nations General Assembly is being held, the French foreign minister announced that Paris will call for an emergency Security Council meeting on Lebanon this week.

Thousands of families have also fled their homes after the Israeli military said it struck 1,300 Hezbollah targets in an operation to destroy infrastructure the armed group had built up since the 2006 war.

Hezbollah, meanwhile, fired more than 200 rockets into northern Israel, according to the military. Doctors said two people were injured by the shell.

Nearly a year of cross-border fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, sparked by the war in Gaza, has killed hundreds of people, most of them Hezbollah fighters, and displaced tens of thousands on both sides of the border.
