Who is the politician that Erdogan has chosen to recapture Istanbul?
Murat Kurum

The name of Murat Kurum, the former Minister of Environment and Urban Planning, was announced by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan as a candidate for Istanbul Municipality in the March 31 local elections, against current mayor Ekrem Imamoglu.

The March 31 election will be a repeat of 2019, when the Kemalist opposition won the country's largest municipality for the first time in 31 years. It is an informal rule in the Turkish political scene that Istanbul, with its 18 million inhabitants, is the "key" to power for the entire country.

48-year-old Istanbul MP and engineer Murat Kurum was a minister from July 2018 to June 2023 in the previous Erdogan government.

He completed his district studies in Ankara and then graduated from the Civil Engineering Department of Selcuk University.

From 1999 to 2005 he worked as an engineer in the construction sector, while from 2006 to 2018 he served in various positions in the State Directorate of Social Housing.

Murat Kurum, as former Minister of Urban Development, is credited with the rapid reconstruction program of areas affected by the February 6 earthquakes in eastern Turkey. His experience in rebuilding urban areas and the urban regeneration programs implemented by the government in the past are expected to be the comparative advantage that the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) will present in defending Istanbul against the major earthquake predicted by seismologists.

Murat Kurum is married and has three children.

Current President Ekrem Imamoglu will be the candidate of the Republican People's Party (CHRP) in Istanbul. If he loses, this would be a heavy blow with unbearable political consequences for the main opposition party after losing the presidential elections. From this point of view, the March 31 polls decide for Imamoglu his political future.
