Zohran Mamdani, the first Muslim mayor of New York, has taken a tough stance against Benjamin Netanyahu.

"He is a war criminal who should be tried in The Hague," he declared during an interview with the "New York Times", not ruling out the possibility of his arrest if the Israeli prime minister "landed" in New York for the UN General Assembly in September.

It remains to be seen whether New York's first citizen effectively has the authority to act.

For this reason, Mamdani explained, his administration is in contact with the legal office to verify whether the mayor has the authority to order the New York Police Department to proceed with the arrest of a foreign leader.

"We are in an active discussion phase with lawyers: We will do what the law allows me to do, but we will not write 'ad hoc' rules for this purpose," explained Mamdani, who in the past had spoken openly about genocide in Gaza, drawing considerable criticism.

Israel's reaction was immediate: "Instead of focusing on his responsibilities as mayor, he has chosen to incite hostility and attract media attention by attacking the state of Israel," Israeli Ambassador to the UN, Danny Danon, declared sharply.
