Zoo in Denmark appeal to residents: Bring pets you don't want, let's feed predators

A zoo in Denmark has called for citizens to donate unwanted pets to feed predators behind bars.

Aalborg Zoo in northern Jutland issued a call for donating healthy small animals to ensure "nothing goes wrong".

In a post on social media, zookeepers suggested that the animals would be fed to their European lynx contingent.

"Guinean chickens, rabbits and pigs make up an important part of the diet of our predators," the zoo said. "Especially the European lynx, which needs whole prey that resembles what it would naturally hunt in the wild."

The owners could donate a maximum of four animals, zookeepers said, which would then be euthanized before being used as food.

Aalborg Zoo is also accepting donations of horses to feed its animals, provided they are accompanied by the proper documentation. In Denmark, horse owners may receive tax deductions in certain circumstances when donating animals to zoos.

Revolted social media users expressed their anger on the zoo's Instagram page. "Shame on you," wrote one Instagram user.

Another said: "Asking people to send you healthy animals they no longer want in order to slaughter and feed zoo animals is one of the weirdest things I've ever read."

Last week there was outrage when Nuremberg Zoo in Germany killed 12 healthy baboons, citing overcrowding in their cage, and then gave them to lions, tigers and wolves.

German media reported that baboon corpses had their hands and feet removed before being fed to predators, in the eyes of zoo visitors.
