China has responded to Western criticism by saying it will remain neutral in the Russia-Ukraine war and will not sell weapons to either side. As Voice of America correspondent Cindy Saine reports, Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang's statements were made during a tense press conference with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang hosted his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock on Friday. He said China wants to work for peace between Russia and Ukraine, adding that Beijing will not supply weapons to either side.

Ms. Baerbock had this honest reaction.

"It is good that China has signaled its commitment to a solution, but I honestly wonder why the Chinese position so far does not include a call to the aggressor, Russia, to stop the war," said Germany's top diplomat, Baerbock.

Her stay in Beijing follows last week's visit by French President Emmanuel Macron. The French president drew criticism when he said Europe should not take sides in the conflict between the United States and China over Taiwan.

Tensions in the region have escalated as China conducted massive military exercises encircling Taiwan.

On the other hand, Taiwan reacted by holding an exercise where it simulated the reaction in case of a Chinese attack.

China's foreign minister called on Germany and others to condemn Taiwan.

"Pro-independence separatist forces, with the support and influence of some foreign forces, are engaged in separatist Taiwan independence activities. This is the main cause of the tense situation in the Taiwan Strait today. If everyone hopes for stability in the Taiwan Strait and peace and tranquility in the region, they must take a clear stand against Taiwan's independence and foreign interference," Chinese diplomat Qin Gang said.

Ms Baerbock said a military escalation in the Taiwan Strait would be a disastrous scenario for global trade and for export-dependent Germany.

Some experts say there are rumors that President Macron has negotiated with China to give up arms shipments to Russia in exchange for France appearing to side with China on Taiwan. Now it remains to be seen whether Beijing will honor its promise not to sell arms to Moscow.

"I am curious to see if this is a credible commitment and if China sticks to the commitment. I question the agreement between Mr. Macron and Beijing. I'm curious to know if all this maneuvering was worth it?", says Ms. Carisa Nietsche from the Center for a New American Security.

But another expert told VOA that while it was not the right time for Mr Macron's visit, he may have a valuable message for policymakers in Washington and Brussels that Europe is already on edge as Russian aggression in Ukraine continues. it happens so close to their territory.

"But digging deeper, this is also a signal to the United States and to NATO allies that the crisis with China and Taiwan is closer than it seems, but we want to make sure that the United States does not focus entirely their attention there and attract or divert resources away from Europe and away from the confrontation with Russia", assesses Ms. Sibel Oktay from the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.

China announced that it will send Defense Minister Li Shangfu to Russia next week for a four-day visit, at the invitation of his Russian counterpart, Sergei Shoigu./ VOA
