United States President Donald Trump has said that the European Union made the right decision to suspend counter-tariffs against the United States.

Trump said the EU would be treated during tariff negotiations as a single bloc and not as individual countries.

Trump said he appreciates the EU, which he said is "very tough, but very smart," saying they decided to "restrain a little" with their retaliation after seeing how Trump treated China.

Trump also talked about a deal with China during the cabinet meeting, after imposing 145% tariffs.

"We'll see what happens with China. We would like to be able to make a deal. They've really taken advantage of our country for a long period of time. They've ripped us off," Trump said.

"All we're doing is putting everything back in its rightful place. We're resetting the table, and I'm sure we'll be able to do very well," Trump said.

"I have great respect for President Xi. He has been, in a true sense, a friend of mine for a long period of time," Trump said.

"I think we're going to end up working on something that's very good for both countries. I look forward to that," Trump concluded.
