Storm chaos in Spain, streets flooded in Barcelona

A powerful storm hit Spain, with roads turning into rivers, tourists stranded at airports and lightning forcing people to run indoors.

Strong winds and torrential rain also caused chaos in Majorca, where flights were cancelled and roads were blocked, as the area was battered by Hurricane Melissa.

Meteocat, Catalonia's meteorological service, put Barcelona on an orange alert after the city was hit by torrential rain, hail and strong winds. Videos show cars trying to cross flooded streets in Barcelona, ??where a stay-at-home warning has been issued.

The Catalan Civil Protection Service advised citizens not to go outside or move during the heavy rain. The storm caused major problems across Catalonia, with flooding, downed trees and the cancellation of train and flight services, while university classes were postponed.
