Nancy Pelosi, the first female Speaker of the US House of Representatives and considered a titan of Democratic party politics, will not run for re-election to Congress, ending nearly four decades of public service.

The 85-year-old Pelosi announced her retirement from office in a video posted on social media on Thursday.

Pelosi said she will stay in Congress for another year, but will not seek another two-year term in next year's midterm elections.

The congresswoman was first elected to represent San Francisco in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1987. She was Speaker of the House from 2007 to 2011 and again from 2019 to 2023.

Pelosi has long been seen as one of the most influential members of the American Democratic Party.
