11 dead, 30 injured in Bosnian nursing home fire

The death toll from a fire at a nursing home in Tuzla, northern Bosnia and Herzegovina, rose to 11 on Wednesday and around 30 people were injured, police said.

The fire engulfed the seventh floor of the old nine-story building at around 8:45 p.m. local time on Tuesday, sending flames and smoke billowing from the upper floors into the night. The cause is not yet clear.

Local media said many of the dead were disabled and those who were rescued were moved by emergency crews from upper floors to lower ones. Some of the injured were in critical condition.

Identification of the victims will begin later Wednesday and an investigation into the cause of the fire will begin as soon as conditions allow, police said.

"Authorities are taking all necessary action to shed light on the conditions that caused this tragic event," the nursing home said in a statement.

The government of Republika Srpska, the Serb Republic, one of the two entities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, offered its assistance to Tuzla.

"We feel the pain and are always ready to help," Savo Minic, Prime Minister of the Republika Srpska, wrote on the social network X.
