In his historic speech after winning the New York mayoral election, Zohran Mamdani addressed Donald Trump with a clear message:
" So, Donald Trump, since I know you're watching, I have four words for you: Turn up the volume ."
Mamdani promised a government that will represent every New Yorker and rebuild the city according to the community's vision.
Zohran Mamdani's full speech after winning the Democratic primary for mayor of New York:
Thank you, my friends. Tonight, we made history. In the words of Nelson Mandela, 'It always seems impossible until it's done.' My friends, we have done it. I will be your Democratic nominee for mayor of New York City.
An hour ago, I spoke with Andrew Cuomo about the need to bring this city together, and I want to thank Brad Lander, who did just that. Together, we have shown the power of the politics of the future, of partnership and honesty.
Today, eight months after launching this campaign with a vision of a city that every New Yorker can afford, we have won.
We are a model for the Democratic Party, a party where we fight for working people without apology. A life of dignity should not be reserved for a lucky few. It should be a life that city government guarantees for every New Yorker. If this campaign has shown the world anything, it is that our dreams can come true. Dreaming requires hope and coalition.
Because this is not my victory, this is ours. It is the victory of the aunt from Bangladesh who knocked on door after door until her legs hurt, of the 18-year-old who voted for the first time, and of the uncle from Gambia who for the first time felt part of the city he calls home. Dreaming requires solidarity, and when I look out of this room and the midnight horizon, this is what I see.
Canvass launches in the pouring rain, kids calling their parents, strangers caring for those they'll never meet, a New Yorker who believes in each other. This is solidarity, and it defines our victory.
On Friday night, as the sun was setting, I began a 13-mile walk from Inwood to the Battery. Many workers were still working: waiters, subway conductors, musicians. Each carried a dream with them as they worked, as each of us dreams of a more hopeful and affordable New York.
This has been a historically contentious race, filled with millions of media slanders. I hope, now that these primaries are over, that I can introduce myself once again, not as a 30-second commercial or a mailer, but as I will lead as mayor.
I will be the mayor for every New Yorker, whether they voted for me, for Cuomo, or felt let down by the political system. I will fight for a city that works for you, is affordable, and is safe. I can't promise you'll always agree with me, but I won't hide from you. Your concerns will always be mine, and I will put your hopes before mine.
Democracy is under attack from billionaires, officials who care about personal enrichment, and authoritarian leaders who rule by fear. For too long, New Yorkers have struggled to find a leader who represents us, and we have been repeatedly betrayed. When we no longer believe in our democracy, it becomes easier for people like Donald Trump to convince us.
As FDR said, democracy dies not from lack of love for it, but from fatigue, insecurity, hunger, and the government's inability to give people hope. In New York, we don't have to choose between freedom and security. We can be free and just.
Every new voter, every citizen who fought to vote, every New Yorker who sees solutions to everyday challenges, has renewed faith. Together, with New York, we have renewed democracy. This city belongs to the people.
I thank everyone who brought me into this world: my mother and father, Mira and Mahmood, and my wonderful wife.
Now let's lead this city toward an affordable city for every New Yorker.
