Mexican President sexually harassed, security reacts late (VIDEO)

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum was sexually harassed on Tuesday afternoon by an unknown man, who approached her and attempted to kiss her, while the surrounding crowd looked on in surprise without immediately reacting.

The harassment only ended when Juan Jose Ramirez Mendoza, head of the General Directorate of Presidential Services, intervened.

The entire unusual incident was filmed by passersby.

The delayed reaction of Sheinbaum's security team, which, like her predecessor Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, has rejected the idea of a presidential guard, has reopened the debate about the level of protection for heads of state in Mexico.

According to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography, 45% of Mexican women have experienced street harassment.

Sheinbaum was walking from the National Palace to the Ministry of Education when the man approached her, hugged her, tried to kiss her, and touched her. She calmly but worriedly pushed him away, and was later heard telling her coworker, “Don’t worry.”

The Federal Penal Code classifies physical contact without consent as sexual harassment, punishable by up to five years in prison. In Mexico City, the penalty is up to four years, plus a fine and a restraining order. Several media outlets reported that the aggressor had been arrested, but authorities have not confirmed this.

Women's rights groups called the incident evidence of the normalization of sexist violence in the country and urged the president to use the occasion to send a strong message against the phenomenon. The Ministry of Women's Affairs stated that "no woman, regardless of position, is exempt from sexual harassment" and that "reporting them is essential for justice and cultural change."

Activist Diana Luz Vazquez added: "If a man dares to do this to a president, imagine what the rest of us experience."

The incident comes at a time when the safety of officials in Mexico is in question, following the murder of Mayor Manzo, while Sheinbaum's decision not to have a special protection force is being sharply criticized.
