The Netherlands has voted and will have a new prime minister. Left-wing liberal Rob Jetten has the best prospects. He could be the first gay man to lead the Dutch government.

The Netherlands could have a new prime minister, 38-year-old liberal leftist Rob Jetten, who is the clear frontrunner for the job. And with him, the country could have a "first gentleman" at the prime minister's side for the first time in the Netherlands. Jetten's fiancé comes, like Queen Máxima, from Argentina. He is 28-year-old Nicolás Keenan, a professional hockey player born in Buenos Aires.

Keenan, in his own words, is extremely proud of his fiancée and his election victory. Election day, as he says, lasted a very long time for him. "The night of waiting for the results was like a World Cup final for me," Keenan said. Keenan has already achieved success with the Argentine national team and has participated in the Olympic Games in Paris and Tokyo. Eight years ago he moved to The Hague and plays there for the professional club HC Klein Zwitserland.

Meeting at the supermarket

The two met by chance in The Hague. "Right in the supermarket," Jetten told Linda magazine. At the time, he was Minister for Climate and had to temporarily move out of his apartment in the summer of 2022 for security reasons, during violent protests by farmers. Jetten settled in the neighborhood where Keenan lives. The two met by chance in a supermarket and fell in love.

Keenan was the first player in Dutch professional men's hockey to come out as gay. However, not everyone welcomed the couple's love with enthusiasm, even in a supposedly tolerant country. Jetten came out publicly and read the homophobic hate messages he was receiving.

Head over heels in love

The left-liberal politician makes no secret of his great love. He spoke about it several times during the election campaign. Many people noticed that he was constantly smiling, and some observers jokingly commented that the reason for this was not only his optimistic political messages, but that he was head over heels in love.
