Blow to Russia, Azerbaijan will adapt its army to NATO standards

Azerbaijan has decided to align its military with NATO standards, a decision that many experts have interpreted as a blow to Russia.

Previously, the Azerbaijani army used mainly Soviet and Russian weapons. The transition to NATO standards means that in the future there will be purchases of weapons from NATO members such as the US, Germany, France, the UK, a gradual removal of Russian-made equipment and training of personnel on Western systems.

"Baku closely cooperates with the Turkish military and the defense ministries of other NATO countries. Azerbaijan has achieved its main goal since the liberation of its lands from occupation," Ilham Aliyev said while receiving a NATO delegation.

In August, amid worsening relations with Russia, Aliyev declared that Azerbaijan must always be ready for war. "If any sick mind dares to carry out any provocation against Azerbaijan, it will regret it again," he declared.
