Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has reiterated that Canada has no intention of becoming the '51st state' of the United States. In an interview with MSNBC on Sunday, Trudeau discussed President-elect Donald Trump's repeated comments that Canada could become part of the United States.

"This is not going to happen. I know how a successful negotiator likes to keep people off balance. The 51st state, it's not going to happen," he said.

The Canadian prime minister, who has faced growing unpopularity in polls ahead of a national election, announced he will resign in March after his Liberal Party elects a new leader.

Regarding the fact that Trump referred to him as "Governor Trudeau" and not the Canadian prime minister, he added:

"I tend to focus on the essentials and not on people choosing nicknames for me. I mean, if I were that thin, I probably wouldn't have lasted so long in politics."

Trudeau added that one of the main reasons Canada will not join the US is simple: that Canadians don't want to.
