President Trump has attacked Elon Musk, saying he has "gone off the rails" after the world's richest man announced he is forming a new political party.

"I'm saddened to see Elon Musk completely derailed, becoming a disaster over the last five weeks," Trump said on Truth Social on Sunday.

"He will even create a Third Political Party, despite the fact that they have never been successful in the United States."

He added that the Republicans' approval of the "Big Beautiful Bill" is a victory for the country, despite the fact that it will negatively affect Tesla and the electric car industry.

"Unfortunately for Elon, this bill eliminates subsidies for electric cars, something I have been opposed to from the beginning," Trump said. "I campaigned on this even when Elon gave me his support. He told me he had no problem with it," the White House chief of staff said.

Musk's attempt to create a new party, the American Party, is the latest rift in his relationship with Trump.

The world's richest man spent billions of dollars on the US president's presidential campaign and then Trump rewarded him with a leadership position in controlling spending on staff and government contracts.

Their relationship was ceremonially scrapped last month after Trump passed a new spending bill through Congress. Musk opposed the legislation, which is expected to add trillions of dollars to the federal debt.

He has said he will support the main opponents against any Republican who voted for the law, which was passed almost unanimously by Republicans, but has given few details about the new party.

"Endorsing a presidential candidate is not out of the question, but the focus for the next 12 months is the House and Senate," Musk wrote on the X platform on Sunday.
