Roman Starovoi

Former Russian Transport Minister Roman Starovoit died on Monday in what Russian authorities are treating as a suicide, just hours after President Vladimir Putin announced his dismissal from office.

According to the official decree published on the Kremlin website, Starovoit was dismissed from his post on Monday morning, while his deputy, Andrey Nikitin, was appointed as interim minister.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters that Starovoi's dismissal "was not due to a lack of trust," but did not give any other reason for his departure.

The former minister's body was found inside a car with a gunshot wound. Russia's Investigative Committee announced that it is investigating the case, but the main clue remains that of suicide.

Before becoming minister, Starovoit served as governor of the southern Kursk region, a border area with Ukraine that has been subject to repeated attacks, where he was criticized for failures in security management.

The incident comes at a time of major disruption to Russia's air transport system. The weekend and Monday were marked by the cancellation of 485 flights, the diversion of 88 others and delays of more than 1,900 flights.
