President Joe Biden decided to withdraw from the presidential race. Following the announcement, he endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to receive the Democratic Party's nomination for president in the November election.
But the president's support is not enough. Ms. Harris must secure the party's support, while at the Democratic National Convention, which is being held August 19-22 in Chicago, there may be several other potential contenders to receive the nomination as a presidential candidate.
Possible Democratic candidates to replace President Biden.
Kamala Harris – Vice President of the United States
She has led the administration's campaign to protect women's reproductive rights. At first, she had difficulty defining her role in the administration.
Her name is the most talked about among potential candidates, but, like President Biden, support for her is low.
Ms. Harris is a staunch ally of the president, who she came to the defense of immediately after the debate.
She is a former US senator from California and a former attorney general.
Gretchen Whitmer – Governor of Michigan
She won her second term in 2022 with over 54% of the vote in this battleground state.
Her 2022 campaign gave Democrats control of the state legislature and the governorship — for the first time in 40 years.
She has enacted policies that protect abortion rights and gun safety.
Her name has been rumored as a possible candidate in the 2028 elections.
Gavin Newsom – Governor of California
One of the main contenders for replacing President Biden.
The governor often appears in the media to praise or defend President Biden, as well as to criticize former President Trump. He was also the party's key politician in the conservative media.
Newsom was lieutenant governor for two terms and previously mayor of San Francisco.
His name is rumored as a possible candidate for the 2028 elections.
Josh Shapiro – Governor of Pennsylvania
He won the 2022 election with 56% of the vote in a swing state that Trump narrowly won in 2016, while Biden also narrowly won in 2020.
He is a former attorney general in Pennsylvania.
Shapiro emphasizes bipartisan cooperation and has worked across party lines during his tenure.
He has also maintained a high degree of support since he was elected.
The governor gained national attention after quickly rebuilding a collapsed bridge in Philadelphia along an important state highway.
JB Pritzker – Governor of Illinois
He has overseen measures to protect abortion rights, as well as gun safety and control.
Pritzker received national attention for his scathing attacks on former President Trump and support for President Biden.
The billionaire businessman is the heir to the Hyatt hotel chain. He has a fortune of about 3.5 billion dollars.
He has spent $350 million on his two gubernatorial campaigns.
