U.S. Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle said on Friday that the assassination of former President Donald Trump was the agency's "biggest operational failure" in decades.

"On July 13, we failed," Cheatle told lawmakers monday during a congressional hearing. She said she took full responsibility for the agency's mistakes related to the attack on Trump's campaign rally in Pennsylvania earlier this month.

The secret service director has testified before a congressional committee amid growing calls for her resignation over security failures at a rally where a 20-year-old gunman tried to assassinate former President Trump.

The House Oversight Committee heard Cheatle's first appearance since the July 13 attack in Pennsylvania that left one rally attendee dead.

Trump was wounded in the ears and two other participants were wounded by Thomas Matthew Crooks, who opened fire from the roof of a nearby facility.

Lawmakers have expressed anger and raised questions about how an armed man came so close to the Republican presidential nominee when he was supposed to be protected.

The Secret Service has acknowledged that it denied several requests by the Trump campaign for additional security measures in the run-up to the attack.

Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas called the attack a "failure," while some lawmakers have called for Cheatle's resignation or her dismissal by President Joe Biden.

The Secret Service said the agency's director had no intention of resigning. So far, she has the support of the Democrat president and homeland security secretary.

Officials told the Associated Press that before the attack, law enforcement officers were aware of the suspected attacker's actions near where the rally was being held. He was observed performing measurements of the distance from the roof from which he attacked, to the scene where the former president later climbed. Images of Crooks near the security perimeter were also circulated.

Witnesses later saw him climbing onto the roof of an object located 135 meters from the stage where the former president gave his speech to his supporters.

He fired several shots with an automatic weapon, while in his pocket was a device for activating an explosive device in his car parked nearby.

The attack on Trump was the most serious attempt to assassinate a president or presidential candidate since Ronald Reagan's 1981 wounding.

Authorities are continuing investigations into the motive of the attacker, but have so far not found any ideological bias that would shed more light on the attack.

Investigators searching his phone found photos of Republican Trump, Democrat Biden and other top government officials. Investigators also found that he had searched online for the dates of the Democratic National Convention and the dates of other Trump rallies. He also asked for information on depression. /VOA
