A 58-year-old Englishman has been sentenced to 13 years in prison after admitting to passing secrets to Russia while working as a guard at the British Embassy in Germany.

David Smith was a supporter of Vladimir Putin and hated the UK, which led him to collect classified documents in 2018, documents that put the lives of people working at the embassy in Berlin at risk.

The judge of the case said that he started to pass these documents to the Russian Embassy in 2020 and promised that he "had other information ready", in exchange for a financial reward.

The news of the arrest of a spy inside the British Embassy in Berlin shocked the world in the summer of 2021.
