The Italian Foreign Ministry announced that journalist Cecilia Sala, who was in Iran to carry out her "journalistic activity", has been arrested by police in Tehran.
The ministry said in a statement on Friday that Sala, who has a podcast called "Stories" - accounts of life in countries around the world, was arrested on December 19.
She did not give the reason for her arrest, but said the Italian ambassador in Tehran visited her "to verify the conditions and state of Sala in detention."
"The family was informed of the outcome of the consular visit. Sala was able to make two phone calls to his relatives," the Italian Ministry said.
Sala posted a podcast from Tehran on December 17th about patriarchy in the Iranian capital.
Iran is regularly accused of arresting dual nationals and Western citizens on false charges in order to use them to pressure Western countries.
Earlier this month, Reza Valizadeh, an American-Iranian citizen and former journalist for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty's Radio Farda, was sentenced to 10 years in prison by the Tehran Revolutionary Court for allegedly "collaborating with a hostile government."
Valizadeh resigned from Radio Farda in November 2022, after a decade of work.
He returned to Iran in early 2024 to visit his family, but was arrested on September 22.
In his two court hearings, held on November 20 and December 7, it is reported that representatives of the prosecution were absent, and their role was taken over by the judge himself, REL reports.
Sources close to the journalist claim that he fell into a "security trap", despite having received unofficial assurances from Iranian security officials that he would not face legal problems when he returned to Iran.
Iran is among the most repressive countries in terms of press freedom. Reporters Without Borders ranked Iran 176th out of 180 countries in its 2024 World Press Freedom Index.
