Azerbaijan Airlines suspends flights to 7 Russian cities after plane crash

Azerbaijan Airlines has announced the suspension of flights to seven Russian cities, a move that comes after the tragic crash of one of its planes on December 25 in Kazakhstan, during a flight to Grozny, Chechnya. The news was reported by several Russian media outlets, including the Interfax agency.

Despite this suspension, the airline has confirmed that it will continue flights to six major cities in Russia, including Moscow and St. Petersburg.

Meanwhile, earlier today, another Azerbaijan Airlines plane, which was bound for the Russian city of Mineralnye Vody, returned to Baku after the crew was notified of the closure of part of the airspace in southern Russia, according to the TASS news agency.

Azerbaijani government sources have exclusively confirmed to Euronews in Lyon that the cause of the plane crash was a Russian surface-to-air missile, which hit the plane during a drone flight over Grozny, Chechnya. According to the sources, the missile exploded near the plane and its fragments hit passengers and crew in the cabin.

The strike occurred while flying over the Caspian Sea, and the heavily damaged plane was not allowed to land at any Russian airport, despite the pilots' requests for an emergency landing. As a result, the plane was forced to fly over the sea to the city of Aktau in Kazakhstan. According to other reports, the plane's GPS navigation systems were jammed during the flight over the Caspian Sea, aggravating the situation.

During landing, the plane burst into flames, killing 38 people. 29 passengers survived, while several injured are still in intensive care.
