Ukrainian and Russian forces have been engaged in heavy fighting in various parts of Ukraine as referendums organized by Russia in four regions that Moscow hopes to annex are nearing completion.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has said the Donetsk region in the east remained his country's and Russia's top strategic priority, with fighting engulfing several towns as Russian troops try to advance south and west.
Fierce fighting has taken place in the Kharkiv region in the northeast, the focus of a Ukrainian counteroffensive this month. Ukrainian forces attacked four bridges and other river crossings to cut supply lines to Russian forces in the south. Missiles hit the airport in central Ukraine, destroying infrastructure and rendering the airport unusable. Attacks were also recorded in the Odesa region where Russian forces used Iranian drones.
Moscow hopes to annex Kherson, Luhansk, Donetsk and Zaporizhzhia provinces in the east and south, which make up about 15 percent of Ukraine. None of the provinces is fully under Moscow's control, and fighting has raged along the entire frontline, with Ukrainian forces reporting more advances since they routed Russian troops in Kharkiv earlier this month.
Russian media have announced that the referendums in the four occupied territories of Ukraine are valid, claiming that participation had already exceeded 50%. Russian state agency Tass reports that voter turnout was 86.89% in Donetsk, 83.61% in Luhansk, 63.58% in Kherson and 66.43% in Zaporizhzhia.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is scheduled to address both houses of the Russian parliament on September 30 and may use the speech to formally announce Russia's acceptance of the Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine.
Flights out of Russia have increased and cars have blocked border checkpoints. At the only road border to Georgia, the authorities have allowed Russian citizens to enter without a visa. More US funding for Ukraine will be approved in the coming days after negotiators in Congress agreed to provide $12 billion in new military and economic aid.
