The remains of an American climber who had been missing for 22 years have been found on a mountain in Peru where they were buried by an avalanche.

Peruvian police said the mummified body of climber William Stampfl was found Friday near a camp on Mount Huascaran, one of the highest peaks in the Andes.

Stampfl was trying to climb it in 2002 when an avalanche buried him in snow and ice. Police said his still-frozen body was found at an altitude of 5,200 meters on the mountain that reaches up to 6,768 meters.

It is not yet clear how the climber's body was found, but it was preserved along with his clothing due to the snow, ice and glacial climate, and even his license was found. Some images show the body in mountaineering clothing and mountaineering boots.

Mount Huascaran is one of the most attractive peaks for tourists. Hundreds of them head to its height every year, accompanied by local guides, and it takes about a week to reach the top.

William was accompanied by two friends, Steve Erskine and Matthew Richardson when the three were swept away by the avalanche. The body of the former was found not long after the accident, while Matthew is still missing.
