North Macedonia, NATO's newest member state, has decided to send several Soviet-made battle tanks to Ukraine's armamentforces, as the country prepares to modernize the army according to alliance parameters.

Skopje aims to buy new battle tanks to guarantee interaction with other member states of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, the Defence Ministry explained.

This allows some main combat tanks - their number not specified - to be sent to Ukraine. Normally Skopje would dismantle them, but Kiev needs them, according to the same source.

North Macedonia has 31 Soviet-designed T-72 tanks. Video uploaded to social media by the Makfax news agency shows that some of these tanks are being transported by truck near the border with Bulgaria.

These tanks were handed over to authorities in Skopje from Russia in 2000 during the Liberation Army movement led by Ali Ahmet.

The 2001 uprising was an armed conflict that began when the Albanian KLA militant group, formed by veterans of the Kosovo War and the uprising in the Kumanovo Valley, attacked Macedonia's security forces, mainly in the Tetovo area in response to continued repression by the government at the time.

The conflict ended with the Ohrid agreement that secured more rights for Albanians, including Albanian today as an official language and recognition of the use of national symbols as well as Albanian education.
