A thief in Orlando swallowed two pairs of earrings worth a total of $769,500. 32-year-old Jaythan Gilder swallowed the Tiffany & Co. diamond earrings around the time he was arrested on Feb. 26, according to police.

The defendant was under police surveillance at an Orlando hospital for “more than twelve days” until the earrings were removed from his body.

Gilder faces a charge of first-degree grand larceny. Meanwhile, Tiffany's has cleaned the earrings.

How did he manage to steal the expensive jewelry?

Police say Gilder posed as an assistant to an NBA player so they could show him “very expensive jewelry” in a VIP room at a Tiffany & Co. store in Orlando, Florida on February 26.

The perpetrator allegedly distracted store employees and then ran out with two pairs of earrings. The defendant grabbed but then threw away a diamond ring worth $587,000 as he fled the store.

When officers arrested him, they saw him "swallowing various items believed to be the stolen earrings," police said.

Officers transporting Gilder to prison heard him say, “I should have thrown them out the window.” In prison, he reportedly asked staff, “Am I going to be blamed for what’s in my stomach?”

Police later released an X-ray showing his abdomen with a foreign object inside.

The Orlando Police Department transported Gilder to an area hospital and monitored him for about two weeks until the earrings were found.

Detective Aaron Goss said the case "quickly became a marathon, not a sprint."

On March 12, police said they discovered the fourth Tiffany & Co. earring. When the earrings were taken to Tiffany's, the store's chief jewelry officer confirmed that the serial numbers on the jewelry matched the stolen pieces, Goss said.

Gilder is currently being held in the Orange County Jail.

Police allege his criminal record includes a 2022 robbery at a Tiffany & Co. store in Texas.

There are 48 separate warrants for his arrest in Colorado.
