The Hague trial, Thaci's defense requests additional funds

The Chairman of the Board of the Foundation "Support for the legal defense of Hashim Thaçi", Ismail Syla, said that this foundation has sent an official request to the Speaker of the Parliament Glauk Konjufca, the Prime Minister Albin Kurti and the Minister of Justice, Albulena Haxhiu for increasing the financial support for the legal defense of former president Thaçi.

In this letter, the Board of the Foundation points out that the limitations imposed on legal defense expenses, which are determined by Administrative Instruction MD-NR.01/2024, have put the defense team of former president Thaçi in an impossible situation to meet obligations as due to lack of funds one of the main lawyers has left and the current lawyer has warned that he may leave by the end of the month.

"In this way, this would not only result in the criminalization of Mr. Thaçi's defense team, but would also suspend or postpone the judicial process itself for at least six additional months until he is replaced by another lawyer who will he needed considerable time to familiarize himself with the circumstances of the case and the four-year judicial procedure that is underway", the request states.

The foundation also estimates that it is urgent and necessary to allocate additional funds to ensure the effective protection of Thaçi in the judicial process against him.

"Therefore, as a Foundation unable to provide financial support for the financial needs of the defense team of Mr. Thaçi, we consider additional financial support as urgent and necessary, in order to ensure the continuation of effective protection for former President Thaçi in the judicial process against him. On the other hand, the Foundation, although it was established precisely to provide an alternative source of financial support in order to ease the financial burden of the public budget regarding this process, has not managed to provide sufficient funds which would make unnecessary and without the object of this request", it is further stated in the request of the Foundation.
Likewise, the Foundation believes that financial support from the institutions of the Republic of Kosovo is essential to ensure effective access to justice and to protect the integrity of the KLA's struggle and the right of the people of Kosovo to freedom.

On August 21, 2024, the Trial Panel in the case of Thaçi and others approved the termination of the legal representation of Kadri Veseli by the defender Ben Emmerson./Kosovapress
