A poll conducted by INSA for Bild newspaper has revealed that almost two-thirds of Germans are now washing less in response to the government's many calls to save due to the crisis and increased living costs.
62% of survey respondents said they had reduced their shower time and were washing less often compared to just a few weeks ago, while 35% said they had not changed their cleaning routine.
Those in the lowest income group said they had changed their behavior more than any other group. Almost half of respondents (45%) also said they were preparing for a tough winter, such as buying an emergency power generator.
Germans have been warned they will have to face a drop in living standards in response to the crisis.
Many have responded by panic buying stoves and firewood. Earlier this month, Hamburg's environment minister warned Germans that hot water could be rationed and limits imposed on maximum room temperatures as a result of the energy crisis.
