There is no doubt that the tragedy of Turkey has affected the whole world.

The images that come from the areas of the devastating earthquake are one more painful than the other, especially those that center on the person, the grieving person. Among them, one was among the saddest: that of father Mesut holding the hand of his lifeless daughter, Irmak, who was crushed by the rubble.

Equally touching is the photo of this father with his now-dead daughter last summer, where they both smile at a water fountain while looking into the lens. They both look happy.

But how was the sad photo made, the one after the earthquake, where the father is alive and the daughter has died under the rubble, where he is holding her hand?

A photographer for 40 years, including 15 years at AFP, Adem Altan stood for a moment in front of a collapsed building in the city of Kahramanmaras, the epicenter of the tragic earthquake. There Altan saw a man sitting in the rubble. No rescue teams had yet arrived at the site on Tuesday, a day after the disaster, so residents tried to clear the rubble themselves to find and save their loved ones.

The man, wearing an orange jacket, stood motionless among the rubble, unfazed by the rain and cold. Then, Adem Altan realized that the man, 60 meters away from him, was holding a hand. He began to photograph the scene: the father holding the hand of his dead child without letting go, amidst the rubble and destruction.

While Altan took pictures, the man watched him carefully. "Take pictures of my child", he whispered in the direction of Adem, his voice cracking and trembling. He let go of his hand that he didn't want to let go of even for a moment to show the photographer where his 15-year-old daughter was lying. And he took her hand again. "I cried. I kept saying to myself: Oh my God, this is excruciating pain," says the photographer. He then asked her about his name and that of his child. "My daughter, Ermak", he answered. "Me, father, Mesut Hancher".

"He spoke with difficulty, in a low voice. It was difficult to ask him more questions as the residents around him were asking people to be quiet in order to hear the voices of possible survivors trapped under the rubble," the photo shows.

At that moment he immediately thought that the fixed image summed up the pain of the earthquake victims. He had no idea the impact it would have.

The photo was published in many media around the world, went viral on social networks, was shared hundreds of thousands of times by Internet users.

Altan has received thousands of messages from all over the world expressing solidarity in the face of the grief of this father in pain. "I think it is a photo that will remain engraved in the memory. "Many have told me that they will never forget this image," he says. Not even the photograph itself.
