A 21-year-old British woman has been arrested and held in prison for three weeks in Sri Lanka , after being accused of drug trafficking.
She was stopped with a large quantity of synthetic cannabis worth millions of euros, which was discovered in her luggage.
According to reports in The Independent newspaper, it is about Charlotte Maylee Lee, a former stewardess from south London, who was arrested on May 12 at Bandaranaike Airport in Colombo, after arriving by flight from Bangkok.
She is being held in custody on suspicion of transporting 46 kilograms of cannabis in two suitcases, an amount worth around 1.4 million euros.
Her lawyer told the media that Lee denies any knowledge of the drugs found in her suitcases. She is being held in Negombo prison, a town north of the capital, and has not yet been formally charged as police investigations continue.
"During the last court hearing, I requested that the seized substances be analyzed by the relevant state department and the report submitted to the court," her lawyer stated.
If convicted, the 21-year-old faces up to 25 years in prison. Charlotte had traveled to Thailand for a holiday and then went to Sri Lanka to renew her 30-day visa, with the intention of returning to Thailand.
She had left Britain for Thailand at the end of April.
The case has sparked increased media interest, as the possibility of a connection has been raised with the case of Bella Callie, an 18-year-old who disappeared while traveling in Thailand and was later arrested in Georgia, on charges of smuggling dozens of bags of cannabis into the country.
Both girls were arrested within a day, after flying alone from Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok.
Callie faces a life sentence if convicted of international drug trafficking in Georgia.
