An opposition member of parliament in Zimbabwe, Desire Moyo, has died in a tragic road accident while traveling on the Bulawayo-Gweru highway, where the car he was traveling in hit an elephant. Moyo, 45, was not only a politician but also a renowned poet.
He died on the spot, while four others in the vehicle were injured and transported to the hospital. According to a colleague, the elephant reacted after the collision by attacking the car.
The accident happened on Friday, and Moyo would have turned 46 on Saturday, the day after the accident. He was elected to the Nkulumane constituency in Bulawayo, the country's second largest city, and was a member of the Parliamentary Committee on Sports, Culture and the Arts.
Many tributes have been paid to Moyo, who was known for his commitment to the creative and cultural sectors. Bulawayo Mayor David Coltart described him as an "iconic and creative leader".
