An event that resembles a horror movie and with details still unclear. This is the description emerging from the ongoing investigation into the knife attack on the mayor of the town of Herdecke, Iris Stalzer, in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia in Germany.

In the hours before the call for help and the arrival of the ambulance, the 57-year-old was allegedly tortured for hours in the basement of her home by her adopted daughter, 17.

The police's reconstruction of the event was confirmed by the testimony of the victim herself, who regained consciousness and accused the girl.

According to police sources cited by the Bild newspaper , the adopted daughter attacked her mother in the basement, attempting to burn her hair with hairspray and a lighter, and stabbed her several times with two knives.

Over thirteen stab wounds were found on the woman's body and abdomen. In addition, injuries to her skull indicate that her head had been hit by an object.

The girl is suspected of acting out of revenge. Later, she appears to have repented, as indicated by her attempt to clean up the blood, and the call for help at 12:40.

In the call for help, the girl stated that her mother, before losing consciousness, had said that she had been attacked by a group of people. This claim caused alarm throughout Germany, due to the recent state elections and political tension after the defeat of the far-right in the run-off.

However, if it was revenge, it was a personal one. There had been a violent conflict in Iris Stalzer's home before. Last summer, a heated argument had ended with the adopted daughter threatening him with a knife.

Currently, the charges against the girl are for grievous bodily harm and not attempted murder.

According to Attorney General Bernd Halldorn, the call for help could be interpreted as a sign of repentance.

The girl is currently in a psychiatric hospital under police supervision, while her 15-year-old brother is still under investigation and in the care of social services.
