Denmark plans to buy 16 new American F-35 fighter jets to strengthen its defense system, the defense minister announced today, two weeks after an unidentified drone violated its airspace.
"We have reached a political agreement to purchase 16 more F-35 aircraft, so that we have more units ready for operations in the future," Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said during a press conference.
The cost of this purchase, which will bring Denmark's total number of F-35 aircraft to 43 units, reaches 29 billion Danish kroner (about 3.88 billion euros).
According to the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces, Michael Hyldgaard, this purchase is a strategic addition to national defense and the alliance:
"With the further purchase of F-35 aircraft, our combat capacity is significantly strengthened. This will directly impact NATO's deterrence and collective defense capability," he said.
In addition, Denmark will also invest in counter-drone systems to combat aerial intrusions by unidentified vehicles.
The cost for this project is around 2.1 billion Danish kroner (around 281 million euros).
