A shocking attack has hit the educational community in northeastern France, where a teaching assistant, Mélanie G, was murdered by a 14-year-old student, outside the Françoise Dolto school in the town of Nogent.

The 31-year-old mother of a four-year-old son and described as "a loving and caring woman" died in hospital from her injuries. She was outside the school carrying out a routine bag check when the fatal attack occurred.

According to French authorities, the teenager was arrested at the scene. The motive for the attack remains unclear, while the suspect had no criminal record or known contacts with the police.

Mélanie, a former hairdresser decorated for her creative work, had chosen to change careers to devote herself to educating young people and building a more sustainable life for herself and her son. Former clients and friends gathered near the school to lay flowers and honor her memory.

President Emmanuel Macron condemned the attack, calling it “a senseless wave of violence that is hitting schools.” In a statement on the X network, he said: “While protecting our children, a teaching assistant lost her life… The nation is in mourning.”

Following the incident, the school with 324 students was placed on lockdown, while classes were suspended for two days. A minute of silence will be held in the National Assembly to honor the victim.
