Turkish news agency Anadolu, citing diplomatic sources, reports that Ankara is "considering preventive measures against possible unilateral steps," following Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis' announcement regarding the marine parks announcement.
The Greek Prime Minister has announced that his country has designated several areas as "marine parks" - marine ecological protected areas - in the Aegean and Ionian Seas, just moments after unilaterally declaring the designation of the maritime economic zone.
In its publication, the Turkish newspaper Daily Sabah also reports that Turkey is carefully assessing whether the Marine Parks that Greece is expected to declare in the Ionian and Aegean Seas will overlap with the disputed maritime areas.
The same publication states that while "Ankara supports environmental protection and sustainable management of the seas, it remains firm in its position that unilateral actions under the pretext of ecological protection should not be allowed to cover political motives or change the sensitive status quo in the Aegean."
"Turkey emphasizes that international environmental norms should not be used to undermine the rights of coastal states or to upset the balance of power in disputed areas. Any attempt to create buffer zones that could affect the status of disputed territories is considered unacceptable," the same publication notes.
At the same time, the Turkish newspaper highlights that Turkish authorities argue that efforts to protect the marine environment must be transparent, fair and cooperative, especially in semi-enclosed seas like the Aegean, where maritime borders remain unclear.
