Notorious drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman has filed a petition in Brooklyn District Court to allow his soon-to-be-released wife to visit him in the cell where he is serving a life sentence. in Colorado.
"I am sorry to bother you by asking for authorization for visits from my wife and also to take the girls," writes El Chapo in his request, part of which was published by the "New York Post".
The 66-year-old reminds the judge that his wife, Ema Coronel Aispuro, who was sentenced in 2021 to 3 years in prison for drug trafficking and money laundering, will be released on September 13.
In the letter, El Chapo writes that before and during the trial against him, prosecutors were against the woman's visits, fearing that she would threaten witnesses with messages from the trafficker.
The 33-year-old woman regularly attended her husband's sessions. But according to El Chapo, these claims were unfounded.
Referring to himself in the third person, El Chapo writes: " Dear judge, Guzman is asking as an honor that you allow his wife to visit him.
She is the only person who should have the opportunity to do this, since my sisters and mother do not have visas to travel to Colorado ."
El Chapo married Aispuro when she was still a teenager and the two are parents to two daughters, Emaly Guadalupe and Maria Joaquina.
In January of this year, Guzmán pleaded with the Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to return him to his homeland, as he was being treated in cruel and unfair conditions in the American prison.
He was convicted in February 2019 for drug trafficking and in "Florence Max" prison, he stays in the cell for 23 hours a day and can only go outside for 1 hour.
El Chapo's lawyer, Jeffrey Lichtman, told the "New York Post" that the girls are allowed to see their father, who was sent there by El Chapo's sister, as she was the only one in the family who had an American visa. But for several months, her visa has also been revoked.
